A thorough investigation was conducted after the incident, which occurred on Monday, Oct. 28 at around 12:20 p.m. in Garden City.
On Saturday, Nov. 23, Michael Morgan, of Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny, second-degree possession of a forged instrument and first-degree criminal impersonation.
According to detectives, Morgan entered HL Gross & Bro. Jewelers located at 840 Franklin Avenue and agreed to purchase a loose diamond for $15,987.43.
The customer stated he was going to the bank to obtain a cashier’s check for the purchase.
A short time later, Morgan returned and completed the transaction with a cashier’s check, according to police. Morgan was wearing an FBI jacket and placed a gold-colored FBI badge on the counter during the transaction.
It was later determined Morgan used a forged JP Morgan Chase cashier’s check to pay for the merchandise and is not employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Morgan will be arraigned on Sunday, Nov. 24 at First District Court in Hempstead.
